If your stay here is short, or if you just enjoy planning ahead of time, here is a list of 10 must-see sights.

10. The tunnels and cells of Fremantle Prison

Okay we know what you’re thinking – ‘What is there to see in a prison?’ but Fremantle Prison is so much more than its name implies. From the 19th century, up until 1991, it was in continual use, housing convicts of all ages, genders and backgrounds. The rich history of the prison offers valuable insights into the transformation of Perth, and you’re sure to encounter some memorable stories during your visit. The site also boasts iconic architecture, making it one of the more recognisable landmarks of the city. There are a variety of tours available so you can choose your own adventure through history.

9. The Insta-worthy Blue Boathouse (Crawley Edge Boatshed)

In recent years, and thanks to the powers of social media, the Blue Boathouse has become an international sensation. Just search #blueboathouse on Instagram and you’ll see thousands of photos from past visitors commemorating their time in Perth. It’s even the stock background of some smartphones! In the early 2000s, the boathouse was rebuilt and painted the bright blue colours that you’ll see today. If you want a token of your holiday in Perth, why not head down there to snap your own pic! It’s just a short drive or uber ride from the CBD.

8. People coming and going at Yagan Square

For city lovers, there’s nothing better than watching the ebbs and tides of people while you sit back and enjoy a coffee or a nice meal. In Perth, Yagan Square is the place to do just that. Located nearby Perth Station, it’s a central location nearby the best that the CBD has to offer. There’s also plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars around the square such as Hiss + Smoke and The Shoe, making it the perfect lunchtime or coffee break stop. Yagan Square is also the location of key displays, market stalls and entertainment events throughout the year.

7. The clear waters of Cottesloe Beach

Want to spend a day in the Perth sunshine? Why not head to Cottesloe Beach, one of the city’s most popular and beautiful beaches. The white sand and blue water are ideal for swimming, surfing, snorkelling, or just lounging about in the sun. Dotted along the shore are eateries with delicious food and views such as the famous Indiana Teahouse which will soon be transformed into a hip brunch spot. Cottesloe Beach is also conveniently accessible by public transport.

6. Sunset on the Swan River

Sunsets are even more enjoyable down by the Swan River. For the full experience, we suggest getting onboard a romantic gondola ride or ferry. If you want to get closer to the water, sports like paddleboarding and water biking are also available, though if relaxing is what you’re after we recommend dining at one of the waterfront restaurants such as Amano Restaurant in Elizabeth Quay.

5. The sights and sounds of Elizabeth Quay

Speaking of Elizabeth Quay, you could spend an entire day just exploring this pleasant waterfront precinct. Along the promenade you’ll find unique sculptures and murals inspired by Perth and its inhabitants, along with cafes, restaurants and boutique shops. If you’re travelling with children, the waterpark and playground will provide an afternoon of fun. If you’re looking to unwind and indulge, The Ritz-Carlton, Perth, is nearby with a world-class spa, luxurious dining and a rooftop bar overlooking the river.

4. The art at The Art Gallery of Western Australia

Get a feel for Perth’s art scene with a trip to The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA). There you’ll find The State Art Collection, the finest art collection in Western Australia including works by some of the country’s most impressive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. The collection is constantly growing, with hundreds of artworks added each year. There are also plenty of exhibitions, events and guided tours happening year-round. An art-lover’s paradise!

3. The adorable quokkas at Rottnest Island

Not technically in Perth, but still easily accessible via a ferry from Fremantle or Perth CBD. Rottnest island is home to picturesque beaches and unique flora and fauna. Spend an afternoon whale watching or meet the resident quokkas! Quokkas are not found anywhere else in the world other than other small populations in south west Western Australia. Just make sure you abide by all the guidelines and regulations to protect Rottnest Island’s unique biodiversity.
